We love dark roast coffee, so take that up front for this review. However, I was shocked to see I could subscribe & save Italian Decaf coffee shipped to my house for under $4 per bag. Then, I realized you only get 8 ounces per bag, which is half the grocery store size normal bags. Then we brewed it. I don't think it tasted bad, but even the smell of the grounds wasn't as fresh as other companies. And the flavor was pretty empty - it is so smooth that we found it almost flavorless.



Also, this is a chemically decaffeinated product, and we find it is worth it to pay an extra $1 per bag and go for the Swiss Water decaffeination which is natural and not chemical.



Anyhow, the flavor wasn't to our liking and we have moved on.

We discovered Lavazza coffee while staying in an upscale club in Chicago. The coffee maker in the room had Lavazza Gran Filtro as the choice. I was impressed by the coffee coming out of this little machine, but figured it was just the opulence of the place overwhelming my taste buds. Then I discovered a small Lavazza coffee shop nearby and the coffee was even better. My love for Lavazza coffee was born.



But alas, too much caffeine makes me nuts. Could the decaf be any good? It is! The same smooth, slightly sweet, never bitter taste of Gran Filtro comes through in the decaf. We keep both the regular and decaf on hand and regularly get good reviews on the coffee we serve. I've stopped buying anything else.

I like it as a straight espresso shot - great aroma, not bitter with subtle sweetness, but not as much for cappuccino. Supercrema in my opinion holds up better for those who like to add milk to their espresso drink. I don't think these beans will work at all for those who like latte. I wish all these would come in smaller size because I normally go through 1 Lb of coffee every month and this bag will last me two months.

First of all it is loosely packed. When I first used the product, water came out first before I could see any coffee and that is entirely on the packing. To me the chocolate like taste is not for me. It tempers with the way I like my coffee to taste. Bottom-line it is not nearly as good as Starbucks. Had I rated this product the first week I tried it, I would have given it one star. But now since it has been a while I am a little more forgiving. It is cheaper than most pods to begin with. Pressing on the pod helps the loose packing problem. Since I drink at least 3 cups a day, I have chosen to make one Starbucks and then do the rest with this to save some. But if you ask me to entirely switch to this product, I wouldn't even think about it. However I would suggest the before you get 150 pack, first try the lesser package. At first I felt trapped with 150 pods that I hated until I compromised and coped. If you're not looking to save, look away. But if you want to save, after a while it is not too bad.

I found a brick of Lavazza Crema e Gusto at a local shop some months ago, and tried it in my stovetop espresso maker. For some reason I thought the grind was what I needed (it *does* have a picture of a stovetop machine on it!) but the grind is really very fine, more like what a professional-type machine needs.



But this works even in my Bialetti Brikka 4-Cup Stovetop Percolator stovetop machine, and generates a beautiful crema. The Brikka really wants a slightly coarser grind, so I have to be *very* careful to put in the coffee with a light touch, and not to pack it down even a tiny bit.



The flavor, as others have written, is very rich without being too dark-roasted, with lovely chocolatey notes. Bitterness can come if I overfill the maker so that the coffee is packed too hard, which causes boiling and burning. So care must be taken when using a stovetop maker. But it's truly worth it, because it gives such delicious coffee.

It is not have a bitter taste as a few have suggested. I always use a melitta cup for making any espresso coffee and this one is just delicious. I checked my ph strip and it does not register as acid. It doesn't bother my stomach at all and I am super sensitive to anything acid. American coffee I have a hard time tolerating; the Italian and Kenya coffees that are dark roast espresso are thought by some people via their processing techniques and quality to be alkaline. It makes the American coffee look like junk for how the body responds and the taste. Once you have had this coffee you won't want American coffee anymore.



In case anyone is wondering what a melitta cup is, it is a cone made from plastic or ceramic (mine is ceramic) and it has a hole at the bottom. I adjust the coffee filter to fit it and then put the espress coffee in it and then pour my hot water from the tea kettle into it. I add a little nut milk into the coffee and I am ready to enjoy a wonderful taste. It beats dealing with a coffee maker any day. Each person in the family can have their own melitta cup as it is so quick to do.

You need to think of coffee as a fruit, which it is, and therefore it needs to be fresh. Local for a roaster that stamps the 'Roast date' on the bag for a start (not the 'Best before' date which is often a year after the roast date). I was hopeful, but left unsatisfied. The color of the bean grounds says it all; a light brown not the typical dark brown to black of real espresso. Taste is weak and odd, not rich and solid. Certainly not worth the extra $$. Recommend Cafe Bustelo instead.

My Italian cousin-in-law recently taught me how to make real authentic Italian espresso and cappuccino and Lavazza is her first choice over all other brands. It is so rich and smooth and I have to agree after we ran out of Lavazza and went hunting unsuccessfully for more and ended up buying two other brands. No comparison as there was such a difference in taste. I threw out the other two cans and went hunting on the internet that night and found it the cheapest on Amazon (my favorite place to shop on the Internet). Anyway, signed up for the subscription service and LOVE it. Just about when I was on my last can of Lavazza, here comes an e-mail notifying me that Amazon was about to make another shipment. Perfect timing. Love, love, love this service. By the way, my husband is a die-hard Starbucks fan (very strong coffee) and likes his best as a blend of Lavazza and Starbucks.

I found this ground espresso while living abroad in Germany; I spent countless mornings sipping this divinely smooth nectar on cold European days. There is no better, for the money, espresso. It was the most widely consumed espresso in Germany and this price beats the price I was paying for the same grind by >$1.30. Sit back and enjoy this supremely blended elixir.

I really hoped I would like this espresso, the main reason being that I just can't take the financial assault that Illy Medium Roast puts on my monthly budget. With that being said, I found this to have a cardboard-like, slightly bitter taste. I was hoping to reproduce the rich, nutty taste that I get from a pull of Illy. Perhaps there is another Lavazza product which will fare better. I use a Saeco Classico, so if anyone has some advice, I am open to it.
